Blog#1 — Disagreement does not mean disrespect
I am not the person who always keep an eye on political news, but I have the filter bubble that is identifying myself into centre-left politics. In this case, I prefer to trust the information comes from CNN and CBC because most of the information they output is in line with my cognition.
Firstly, I want to declare that I am not a Trump’s supporter, for he triggered the trade war that causes a vast number of business companies to collapse.
In today’s discussion, I am going to analyze the same piece of news released from two distinct sources, and they are CNN and FoxNews.
Yesterday, I read a news report from CNN says Trump’s refusal to join virtual debate shows his fear of not being able to impose his personality on the showdown. In this report, it is clear to see that Trump is CNN’s most prominent opponent.
(Seeing the CNN news above.)
I summarize four concepts they mentioned in the article:
- Trump can not protect himself. His incompetence causes 210,000 Americans to death.
- Trump will lose the next face-to-face encounter with Biden.
- The President showed his disrespect to his opponent and the moderator.
- It is Trump’s fault that the format of the debate to be changed.
Overall, the entire article is related to critical points towards Trump’s behaviour and decision making.
By contrast, Fox News attempted to evade Trump’s faults, and they are supposed to be on the same side.
I barely read news from FoxNews because according to Ad Fontes Medi, it rates FoxNews as skews right in terms of bias and as mixed reliability in terms of reliability.
(The contrastive article reported by FoxNews is provided below.)
I am trying my best to immerse myself into another filter bubble —— the right-wing party.
It makes me feel very uncomfortable when I saw the title of the report. “I’m not going to waste my time” showed his arrogant personality and disrespect to other candidates.
The article states two notions:
- Trump easily beat him in the first debate.
- Trump is feeling well. COVID-19 will not influence his participation in the US presidential election.
From the FoxNews, I can feel that this institution focus more on the people who stand on the same side with the right-wing party. Obviously, FoxNews “correctly” stands for their position. This group of people are just like robots manipulated by the power of the republican party.
At first, when I saw Fox news, the first impression could be stressful and indignant since the gap of the bias is enormous. However, when I gradually calmed down, I seem to understand why those reporters mean to publish such biased information. They have to feed the audiences who are accustomed to hearing from them. Everyone has their rights to choose which party or what news resources to trust, so there is no absolute right or wrong answer. Viewing FoxNews made my mood down. I can see people have different voices. However, it will not change my position.
To be honest, I did not own such open-minded thought until I study abroad in Canada. In China, because of the one-party system, people have no right to determine which party to trust. We only have one option, which is to follow with our unique president.
My experience:
When I’m immersing myself into an opposite filter bubble, what I learned is I can dislike other people’s words and opinions, but I can’t stop anyone supporting their trusted candidates. Moreover, no matter how I disagree with their perspectives, I need to respect their decisions and positions.
Why do we call them left-wing or right-wing? Because “wing” symbolizes freedom. It is your choice.
